THE THIEF

John 10:10 (NKJV) The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

Jesus showed us so much in this verse about God, our loving Father, and satan, the thief.  I would like to take a little time here in these devotionals to dig into this verse, so that we can see the truth.  It is knowing the truth that will set us free.

Jesus said that the thief is the one who steals, kills, and destroys, not God.  The word thief in the Greek is klepto, which means “to steal.”  It gives a picture of a bandit, pickpocket, or a thief, who is so artful in the way he steals, that his exploits of thievery are nearly undetectable.

Just like a pickpocket who can slip their hands into a person’s pockets, take what they want, and be long gone before that person discovers they were even there, the devil works the same way.  He comes in cunningly and steals from people, and many times they did not even know that he was there.  They had strong faith in an area, and then all of a sudden they are saying, “Well, I do not know what I believe.”  See, he came in and pick-pocketed them.

Many times, the way that the devil does this is through thoughts.  He will put a thought in our mind, and we will end up believing a lie from him.  Today, let us examine every thought, and if it does not line up with the Word, let us cast it down.  Our mind is a battlefield, and that is why satan will fight you so hard in the area of thoughts.  He will always try to get you to think in ways that are contrary to the Word of God.

Peter said it like this in 1 Peter 5:8: “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”

So let us be wise and keep a watchful eye, and when satan tries to get in, we will say, “Oh no, you thief!  I am protected from you by the blood of the Lamb, and by the words of my testimony.  Jesus is my Lord, and I have surrendered to Him!”

Confession:  Today, I am watchful of the ways that the devil would try to steal from me.  I know that he is a thief, so I keep my possessions, especially my thought life, under the authority of Christ.
