MEEK NOT WEAK

Matthew 5:5 (NKJV) Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

Some people think that meek means weak: a spineless person without any backbone at all.  But meekness is not weakness.  In the original language, meek is used in bridling a horse, or taming a wild animal.

The word meek is a picture of power under control.  So when we talk about a meek person, we are talking about one whose life has been brought under the influence of the Holy Spirit.  God is in control of his or her life.

This beatitude tells us that we are to drive our life, yet allow God to be our navigator.  It is like saying, “Jesus, I will drive, but I need you to tell me where to go. If you say turn left, I will turn left.  If you say turn right, I will turn right.  If you say turn around, I will turn around.  I am surrendering my destination to you.”

In Proverbs 3:5-6 it says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”

We need to learn to be sensitive to the divine will of God, and to follow His leading for our life.  Jesus was meek.  Look at what He said in Matthew 11:29, “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart.”

Jesus was meek, yet look at what he did to the moneychangers in the temple.  He made a whip out of cords, and drove all of the moneychangers from the temple.  He scattered the coins of the moneychangers and overturned their tables.  He yelled and said, “Get these out of here!  How dare you turn my Father’s house into a shopping mall!”  Jesus was in complete control of His actions.  He thought about what He was going to do.

So we see that meekness is supreme self-control, empowered by the Holy Spirit.  Today, let meekness control your life, and watch God, your Heavenly Father, direct the steps of your life into His will.

Confession: Today, I let the Holy Spirit control my life.  I give Him the right to lead me and direct me, and I make a decision to follow His guidance.
