TAKE YOUR MEDICINE

Proverbs 17:22 (NKJV) A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones.

Living this scripture is not always easy, but it is always good.  I remember as a kid that my mom would say, ”You need to take your medicine,” and I would close my mouth so tight and say, “No, I do not want to!”  She would try to pry my mouth open, and finally she would call my dad, and then I better open my mouth.  It is funny, but in this verse we need to do the same thing.

Take your medicine.  What is the medicine we take?  It is a merry heart.  This verse shows us that if we have a merry heart, it works like medicine to our being.  When we are grumpy, and do not have a cheerfulness about us, it dries us up.  You might say, “Well, I do not feel like it,” or “I feel like I am just faking it.”  At first, that is how you are going to feel, but as you continue to let joy and happiness rise up in you, it will take over and even become contagious.

This world has so much to be sour about.  You read the newspaper or watch the news, and it is full of bad news.  But when you read the Gospels and you read the words of Jesus, they are filled with Good News.  Be careful what you watch and what you listen to, because it will dictate the course of your life.  Even the shows we watch can affect us.

So today, try being cheerful, even if you do not feel like it.  Put a smile on your face.  Remember, your smile might be what someone else is in need of.  Your cheerfulness might bring joy to someone else’s life.  Go ahead, give it a try, and see the affect that it has!

Confession:  Today, I am going to make a decision to let joy, the fruit of the Spirit, rule my life.  I am going to let my face show it, and be a blessing to others that I come in contact with.  A merry heart does good like a medicine, and I am taking my medicine today!
